The Power of a Great Interview

When you are prepared and do great radio interviews, you never know where it will lead. I won't share names yet because she's negotiating the deal as I write this...but I have to share this success story.

Resource VS Radio Guest

Yesterday I was thinking about how I can be exceptional in the PR coaching department when it comes to my clients. What makes me unique?

I realized I live radio every morning as I play songs, interact with callers, and interview amazing guests that in turn generate more calls and so on....

My dream guests usually turn into resources for me.
What's the difference between a guest and a resource?

Dr. Phil was a resource to The Oprah Show.
James Frey - Author of "A Million little Pieces" was a guest.

Get it?

Because Phil was a resource to Oprah, he was asked back many times to help couples and families. I don't have to tell you how the story ends but he's built a brand that now includes books, seminars, and his own TV show...not to mention huge ratings when he stops by other shows like David letterman.

James Frey came and went. If it wasn't for the recent fiasco about stretching the truth he probably never would have been a guest on Oprah's show again.

A Homerun Radio Interview

I had another great interview today! It was with motivational speaker Brian Klemmer or www.klemmer.com

I’m going to try and breakdown what he did that was so right.

1. He called on time.
2. He apologized for a mix up that was not his fault
3. He complimented my radio show
4. He complimented the listeners and our wonderful area
5. He was full of passion in making a real difference in someones life in the 10 minutes we talked
6. He gave us all hope to be better people
7. He shared how to be successful we need to get out of our heads and into our hearts
8. He thanked me for the opportunity.

I am learning a lot this week. The unknown guests are often better than the big names. Why? They have new ideas that need to be shared with the world and I feel they seem more real than the speaker who’s been making millions for over 15 years.

Brian, thanks for joining my top 10 club….that’s the Top 10 great people I have been blessed to meet in my life!

Life is Great Radio!

This week we had a heck of a topic because my ever sweet and kind co-host was pissed off at the federal government! After going through all the hoops to get a passport, hers was rejected because her forehead was too shiny!

If I was to think of all the reasons to reject a passport…in a million years I never would have guessed…shiny forehead.

This would have been the perfect opportunity for a photographer, a make-up artist, a passport specialist…or anyone with a heartbeat to grab some free air time by calling into the show and teaching us how to get rid of a shiny forhead…or how to take a great picture or…(Insert your own remedy here)

When you hear a completely ridiculous topic like this on the air and you can help…feel free to call and offer your suggestions and words of wisdom.

We’ll thank you for it!

Get On the Radio

It’s not rocket science. There isn’t a set of rules that you must follow to pitch your idea to the media. All you have to do is be relevant and personable. As I talk with more and more producers and DJ’s across North America, I realize it’s the real life topics that get the most ratings.

Listeners love listening to a DJ and his wife or Mom argue over something. This is real life. Radio is one big Reality Show!

We don’t want Doctors or Psychologists unless they will help us prove a point. We want real people who understand real life issues and can help us entertain our listeners.

My advice for today is if you can connect with real life issues then go check out the website of your favorite DJ, then pick up the phone and offer to help or be a resource for whenever they may need you.

Give to Get

I was recently asked to be a guest at a teleclass. I gave freely of my radio knowledge hoping my info would help someone become the next great radio interview.

This was a very powerful hour for me. I have connected with wonderful people who have introduced me to wonderful Motivational Speakers for my Motivational Monday radio segment. Suzanne Burns set me up with Dr. Joe Vitale and we had the best interview. Trevor Cook connected me with Dr Stan Harris who I'll be interviewing this week. Deb and John Paul will be on my show for a life changing experience for a listener (And have become great friends of mine to boot) and Cheryl Scales will be talking about being an inventor...and her new found Hollywood experience. (I'll tell you more in an upcoming blog)

Look at how much came back my way, just because I gave from my heart for an hour. If you're not getting...maybe it's time to start giving!

I sure love all my new friends.

Who's your inspiration

Mine is every person who has to struggle to make it big in their industry. I'm listening to Keith Urban this morning as I work. I must admit I'm a recent fan. What impresses me about Keith besides his great guitar playing and wonderful songs about life is his story of struggle. Today he's one of the biggest Country stars making millions but not many years ago he was sitting in his Nashville apartment wondering why no-one liked his songs. It's taken him 13 years to get to the monster success he's living now with many huge speed bumps along the way. (Addiction problems etc)

How long are willing to take to find success? I sometimes find myself getting frustrated that things don't happen as I want them to. Then I talk with someone else in my industry and find out it's taken them 10 years to get where they are.

Don't be fooled by those who say it can happen overnight. It takes time, dedication, and belief in yourself - even when no-one else can understand what your doing.

Accents on the Radio Win!

During every Tele-class I do, someone inevitably mentions they don’t have a good radio voice. I always ask, “Who says you don’t?”

I want to share a success story. It was during one of my first classes when I was talking about how much I love guests with accents because my listeners take notice and wonder…“Who’s Wayne talking to now?”

Strong accents stand out. They are gold on the radio!

After the class I was contacted by a lady who had this tremendous New York accent. She mentioned that she had always felt self-conscious of her voice after leaving the Eastern US.
I loved her voice. She spoke with such authority and conviction. She is unique and I’m sure I mentioned a few times how I could listen to her for hours.

She contacted me a few weeks ago to share the news that she was asked to do voice-over work for a big corporation. They want her voice on the sales training tapes for the company. The best part…she made more money than I ever have doing voice over work. Isn’t that glorious? If you have an accent and a topic I’ll get you in the radio quickly.

It's happened again. A lazy pitch to get on the radio that makes us laugh. My good friend Chad from Z95.3 in Vancouver gets more of these than I do but we laugh about them everytime. This one was sent with the greeting "Hello all you on-air personalities"....wow a mass email.
People love hearing their name. This is proven scientifically. So if you want to get rebooked, please send a personal note or apologize for sending a mass email.

tis the season

The holiday season means a very busy time on radio. But maybe it's a different busy than you're thinking. This is the time of year when the sales departments take time away from the programming department. They sell more add space than they have. So instead of playing 12 minutes of commercials per hour, we are now playing 15 minutes per hour.

What it means to those of you looking to get airtime with your interviews is...unless it's a seasonal topic, you're better taking the next few weeks off and re-launching you campaign in January.

About the only interviews I'm looking for are light Holiday Topics to make us smile during this very stressful time or New Year Resolutions topics.

If you can tell me how to survive the In-Laws without liquor...you're invited on my show! haha!

If you sent out some media releases in the past few days and didn't get any response...don't sweat it...The DJ's are dipping in the Egg Nogg already!

Track your success on the radio

I heard a radio advertisement and I thought it was brilliant. I’ve seen Dell on TV and in Newsprint but just the other day I heard them on the radio.
The thing that stood out to me was the web URL they used. It wasn’t the regular www.dell.com it was www.dellradio.com Brilliant. They can track which ad has the greatest web response. I love this idea. Oh it’s far from a new idea but I haven’t heard the other big companies doing this. If you want to know if your radio interviews are getting people excited…try it. You can make an easy URL for people to remember when you add radio to the end of it. Example: Wayneradio.com The key is to have something memorable for people to remember as they are driving, getting their kids off to school or distracted by any number of things going on in life.

Get Giddy

I was watching a special on Garth Brooks. He and Trisha Yearwood said something that I thought was key to being a success. Trisha was talking about how giddy Garth was after Alsion Krause sang on one of his songs. How cool is that? The biggest selling country artist of all time was giddy to have someone sing on his record.

I love that story. You have to get excited! I mean jump out of your office chair, call a great friend and share some exciting news. I’m sure my friend Shane gets tired of my calls of excitement about meeting a great speaker or having another business breakthrough. (Oh yeah he calls me too…with his major achievements.) I hope that never goes away. Don’t hold it inside. Shout it from the rooftop and get giddy! OK Call someone NOW….if they ask…just tell them Wayne said so.

Goodbye Ted Koppel

Tuesday Nov 22, Ted Koppel said goodbye to Nightline after 25 years on the air.

Nightline will change to a multi-topic format because it's "hard to keep people engaged with an interview that lasts 15 to 19 minutes," executive producer James Goldston says.

The new Anchors, Martin Bashir and Cynthia McFadden will be in New York; Terry Moran will be in Washington.

OK here comes the key point. How good of a story teller are you? Can you really drag out an interview for an hour? 30 minutes? How about your tele-class?

Life and attention spans have changed. We expect everything instantly. If a Major network with the best interviewers in the world can’t keep viewers entertained for 20 minutes…what hope do we have?

Practice your delivery with a tape recorder. Make your answers direct and to the point. Scrap the fluff and give value in every interview and Tele-class you give. Short interviews can be very powerful

Less is best…just make sure you deliver it with the energy of a George Lucas film!

Trump's endorsement...well not really but kind of...

I love stumbling across articles that use what I teach for publicity. I am reading Donald Trumps book, ‘Art of the Deal.’ And there it was on page 39.
He’s talking about using the media.
He writes, “Sometimes they write positively, and sometimes they write negatively. But from a purely business point of view, the benefits of being written about have far outweighed the drawbacks. It’s really quite simple. If I take a full page ad in the New York Times to publicize a project, it might cost $40,000, and in any case, people tend to be negative about advertising. But if the New York Times writes even a moderately positive one column story about one of my deals, it doesn’t cost a thing, and it’s worth a lot more than $40,000.”

So you want a radio show

I am having more and more people ask me if they should invest and do their own Internet Radio show. I guess we have people online who will teach you in 8 easy steps, how to make millions with your own radio show. As a radio vet…maybe I’m biased…maybe I’m…protective of the skill…but I don’t think it’s easy to host a radio show. Otherwise, why would they pay me so much money to do my morning show?

If you want to actively do a radio show and are dedicated to learning everything there is to learn about it…I say go for it.

If you are doing it because it will give you credibility, I say give the money to charity. It would be much easier spending your day getting on someone else’s show as the expert.

Learn to be a great publicist and you could be everywhere…always talking to different audiences and making a ton more money than doing your own internet show.

Plus when you’re doing it for your self…you wouldn’t have the sales team, the GM, the PD and the bosses wife all screaming at you when you do something wrong. And how fun is that?

Here’s an experiment. Grab some friends. Sit them around your kitchen table and talk to them for 30 minutes. (Now they won’t talk back…only you can talk.) Are they still at the table 30 minutes later? OK now try it with some strangers…and then let them tell you what they really think.

Today I Rant!

I appreciate every email, every web visitor, and every person who trusts me enough to sign up for my free mini-course (On the right side of your screen).

I appreciate every phone call and business lead…so what is up with these so called Publicists and trainers who won’t return an email or a phone call????

Is that not the most frustrating thing in the world? I can’t possibly be the only media trainer who returns emails within 12 hours. Can I? (Some people have said they thought it was an auto responder because I replied so fast.)

I’m getting to a point here. Before someone signs on and does one on one training with me, we spend some time on the phone and see if our personalities gel or not. And guess what…I have passed on my share of wanna be clients. BUT I always help point them in a direction that I think would be of great benefit to them.

I don’t want anything for passing them on to another coach. I am not an affiliate for anyone or anything. Why does this business have to be soooo focused on the money? I want to help. I want to see you succeed. If I’m your guy, great. If not…maybe you’ll recommend someone else to me.

Now here’s my big annoyance…I have emailed the “Big PR People” (You know them if you’ve researched online PR) and said I want to meet them so I can in good conscience send them clients. It’s been 3 emails…and still nothing. No reply. And that’s 3 for each of them.

I guess they make so much money that clients really don’t matter anymore.
OK that’s it, my rant of the day. So PLEASE always respond to your emails.

Chocolate Chips are best when...

Hey, I know chocolate. My fav is the new KitKat followed up with Crispy Crunch, Coffee Crisp and Smarties

But the absolute best is…
Sneaking the Chocolate chips from my wifes baking cupboard (she hates it when I do that) but Man they taste awesome! Why does chocolate tasts so much better when you sneak it? hehe

The simple things are the best. Hotdogs on a campfire, The kids left over Kraft Dinner, a tuna melt, Popcorn with butter, and of course Chocolate Chip cookies dipped in milk!

Oh, did I mention, all the above even taste better if consumed before noon?

Contests and PR

If you have taken one of my seminars, you know that I stress being a great performer when you get a chance to be On-Air. I used to talk about The Crocodile Hunter but the new king of performers is Jim Cramer, host of CNBC’s Mad Money.

This man is wild…untamable and passionate about stocks. Watching him makes your blood boil with either excitement or annoyance…either way…you’ll remember Jim.

His latest “gimmick” is brilliant and I want you to learn from Jim. He’s offering a contest where you can sign up for a virtual $100,000 that you can trade online for a set amount of time. The one who makes the most money will get to talk with Jim live on his TV show.

Contests are a great way to get on the radio. Think about how your topic can get you on air and then how you can stay by offering a contest of some sort. The winner maybe gets your personal training for an hour…whatever it is make it unbelievable.

The local gym just did this with me on Friday. They are having a fitness contest and called to challenge me. It's win win...I get in great shape....they get lots of PR as I talk about it on the radio...and hopefully listeners get inspired to come along with me and get in shape.

Be the Solution

The teachers in my province went on strike. Kids are stuck at home with nothing to do and the parents are going crazy with child care issues and of course dealing with their children when they could be doing fun stuff like biking, watching daytime TV or having lunch with friends.

So last week I sent an email out to my database of publicists and PR junkies hoping to have many of them seize an opportunity and try booking themselves or their clients on radio stations in BC.

Some did and were booked on 6-10 shows. Others didn’t. And still others completely missed the boat!

If you want to be super successful in your PR campaigns…identify the problem and then offer the solution. It is that simple.

I am writing this because one Publicist (who will remain nameless) sent me her solution…not one but 2 different authors who were perfect for my show. 1. Stop the cycle of abuse and 2. Kids with ADD!

Both worthy topics but how do either one help my listeners who are climbing the walls with their kids home?

No wonder my On-Air Publicity training business of teaching people to do their own PR is so busy.

Remember, identify the problem and then be my solution!

Current Event PR at it's finest

Wayne's note: Last week I sent an email to my newsletter group about the teachers strike in BC Canada. It said "if you have any topics to do with kids education, keeping sane at home"...whatever...to contact all the media in BC and you will get booked. This guest did it sooo well, a bigtime producer dropped me line about the experience.

Hey Wayne,

I wanted to pass on one of the best pitches and correspondence with a guest I have had yet. I have a feeling you have heard from her already so this may be old news but it was a good experience so I will pass it on. I am actually going to forward the 4 emails to you so you see them as they were sent and recieved. Here is a summary of the 4 emails:

1st: Unsolicited pitch directly to me (not spam) from publicist. Does not pitch book right off the top. Actually suggests what we could talk about for our specific audience.

2nd: I suggest a time, date and requesting a main number as well as a backup.

3rd: Actual guest responds confirming time, date and requests a number where we can be reached. Guest also adds most recent bio and a "suggested intro" - very nice touch.

4th: I confirm interview (and give some feedback and ask for some as well).

There will be a 5th email as I always follow up with a copy of the interview for every guest which is followed up with a quick phonecall.

Newsletter Hell

I’m gonna scream! If you sign up for the Wayne Kelly newsletter, I’ll send you something every month…maybe 3 weeks. If I have a teleclass, I’ll send a note and then remind you the day before. I hate being bothered by email and I am sure you do to.

This is why I must write about a newsletter I recently signed up for. It has me screaming STOP THE INSANITY! Man, was that loud on your ears too?

I signed up last Thursday. It’s Wednesday and I have been bothered 15 times. (I swear) I signed up and was sent to both guru’s mailing lists plus the list trying to get me to their big event.

Now, these guys sell a lot of product and are experts in their fields. Am I nuts or is 15 times in 6 days a little much? No wonder I never sign up for these things.

To Get on the radio...Don't say this!

I had a call this week from a lady who wants to get on the radio to talk about a new program she wants to bring to the local area. As she's talking, I'm thinking about many things.

1. Can this be good for my listeners?
2. Will the sales department be upset because it's clearly a sales item?
3. How do I twist this to get it on my show?
4. Will the Program director agree with my decision?

I want to help her. She did everything wrong but I kind of know her so I want to help. (Damn I'm a sucker) But then she blew it.

As I was working out the details in my mind she blurts out..."I've already talked with the radio station down the street (my competition) and the newspaper so you should do it" I couldn't believe she said it. Here I am trying to find away to get her on my show to talk to almost 80,000 people and she pulls that. I tried to explain to her what a dumb thing that was to say and she was arguing that in her business, competition is good. I want to be the first to have a new guest on the air. Think I'm being foolish. It's the same between Letterman and Leno.

So here's a golden rule...NEVER mention competing radio stations ever!!!

Men will not use a coupon.

My radio rant this week was about Men and coupons. I say no man will cut a coupon out of a flyer or a paper and head off to a store unless it's a...no...it doesn't matter what it is...a man would never cut out a coupon. WE hate using coupons. Why? We feel Cheap. Less manly.
Women called in trying to defend their husbands but upon further investigation...the wives cut the coupon and hand it to the man to use. (And this is a rare occasion)

OK you think I'm nuts. Tell me this. Would you have gone on a second date if he pulled out a coupon to pay for your very first meal together? 2 can dine for $7.99

IF your business topic has anything to do with consumers and marketing I urge you to take up this idea and do a survey. Go to the mall and ask merchants. Then call a local station and say you would like to share your results regarding men and coupons. I bet you get on with this topic.

There is only 1 exception to this rule. Man stores. A man can use a coupon at a manly store like Home Depot.

If you think I'm wrong hand your man a coupon and ask him to pick something up for you. Check the receipt when he gets home...I bet he never used the coupon.

Help our marriage

I think I deserve kudos...my wife doesn't...so we need you to decide.

We met this weekend back in 1993. I remember watching her walk into the room and thinking holy (&%^*) who is that! It's the girl from the gym who never talks to anyone. She goes on the stairclimber then does a full body workout and then she's off. She is a mystery. I once held the door open for her but she doesn't remember me. Anyway.

It was an official introduction this weekend back in 93 as I said. Now here is where I need your help.

Women slag men constantly for forgetting birthdays or anniversaries. I woke up today and wished her a happy anniversary...thinking I will win HUGE brownie points for being soooo romantic in remembering the date of our first "real" meeting. She shugged it off as no big deal cause we didn't date until many weeks later.

A recent survey said that 50% of marriage proposals are now being done by women.
Wow. I talked about this on my radio show and it is true…women are now proposing to men. But I can’t help but wonder…are they going through all the pressure that us men have to go through? How about the 1 knee thing?

If your business has anything to do with men, women or relationships, you could have used this as a golden opportunity to grab some radio time. You could have called the radio station and said, “I’m a therapist and I will do a mini survey locally and report the results.”

Then you hit the streets and ask the questions. You could survey your clients for 1 week or anyone else with a heartbeat.

As a radio host I would have loved someone calling the radio station and offering to do this for me. It would have also put a local twist on a national topic and would have put your name out to 80,000 people and maybe even put you on my radio show website
Opportunities for PR are everywhere. You just need to learn how to act on them.

Starbucks

I went to Starbucks the other day. Everytime I walk in there, I see a guy working on a laptop. Never a woman…always different men. Do they plant them? How come I never see anyone sitting with a pad and pen?

I think you should get something free if you ever walk in and DON’T see a guy sitting there with his laptop pretending to work.

Oh but I digress, Starbucks seems to be the guage for how one fits into Pop Culture. If you can order and get what you really wanted…then you are doing OK.

Anyway, The lady in front of me ordered some fancy drink BUT- no foam, no caffeine, no fat, no this and no that. It was about $5.60. I said to her,”why not drink water…cause the drink had nothing fun left.” hehe. I thought I was pretty funny. She didn’t.

So now it’s my turn. I order my Mocha Grande…But I couldn’t help but ask for coffee mate or or some International Delight.

The 2 Starbuckians behind the counter laughed and said “We wish.” It was then I knew it’s all a scam to waste money pretending to feel hip.

Waves

I spent my holidays at Lincoln City, Oregon. What a beautiful ocean front community. I live in the Mountains and have never sat at the ocean before so this was a real treat.
As I sat on the beach I watched the waves crashing onto the shore. Each big wave was trying harder and harder to destroy the sandcastle my kids built.

The water was rough but about 3 or 4 hundred feet out it was calm. I wondered how hard would it be to go through those waves to the calm on the other side. No, that’s crazy I decided and remained comfortable on our little section of beach while I dove back into my book. But I still wondered…what WAS it like on the other side.

I stood up and headed for the water. The first wave slammed me, and not knowing much about waves and currents I said, “this is crazy” and returned to my safe beach.

Some surfers approached and walked into the water. Crazy people I think as I watched with envy. They walked through the first wave and the water was only to their knees…Then through the second wave still only at their knees…finally through the 3rd wave at their waists. They seemed to walk forever with their heads above the water before being forced to swim.

I laughed and said “I can do that”. But it was because of seeing others do it that I knew I could also walk that far… nearly 3/4 of the way through the waves. The surfers probably thought I was the crazy one for sitting on the beach instead of riding these great waves.

I learned a lesson on that beach. What may seem frightening and impossible is perhaps a matter of perception. Find a mentor and then crash through your waves to paradise.

Hmmm, what waves are before me as I seek wealth and success?

A very close friend just left a message on our phone..."he has cancer" were shocking words I never thought I'd hear about my 35 year old friend. He plays all kinds of sports, has a beautiful wife and 2 adorable children ages 6 and 3.

I hung up the phone after he assured me everything is going to be ok...but it's still lingering.

Today my plate was full with catch-up work...but it has now been cast aside. Instead, I choose to play in the pool with my kids. The water felt more refreshing...the laughter more genuine...I do appreciate my great life.

BUT

I want to live better. More dates with Melanie (My bride), more fishing and swimming with Jess and Brody, and more cycling and skiing with anyone who wants to join me. Can you do me a favor and please hold me to this?

Check in with me and ask about the cycling, the skiing, the pool, and the dates. If I ever reply...I've been too busy...please whisper those words...

Publicity is like the Tour

Are you watching the Tour de France? These cyclists are unbelievable! It's amazing how watching a bike race can inspire you to go for a bike ride...but it sure isn't as easy as it looks! I've been mountain biking for years but this year I decided to really tackle the hills and have spent most of the summer battling a local hill. I do a set course everyday after my show ends. At 9:01 I'm scooting off on my adventure. The first time I did "MY HILL" it took me 28 minutes.

BY the end of this hill...my lungs were seizing...I had strange tingling in my right arm and my legs fell off!!! (or it seemed that way)

Well...all the pain is still there BUT I'm finally down to 22:09 and I'm wondering if it's possible to cut the time to under 20 minutes.

I believe in celebrating the smallest victory, even if it's only 1 second. Persistence is key. Same with Self Publicity...start small and enjoy the tiny successes...and soon...you'll be at 20 minutes...or Oprah...set your goal and make it happen!

Damn them! The world is on high alert again. Terror in the streets and subways of London. I just don't get it. Why should Americans pay for a decision made by George? Should the Brits pay because of Tony supporting George? How about Canadians? We're on the hit list too. Makes as much sense as kicking the cat because my kid scratched my car (I don't have a cat...so don't worry).

I vowed to never watch a reality show that features dancing celebrites. No way! Never! Not interested. SO why am I sitting here with my family watching it?

I am watching the final of the show and am cheering on and commenting like I know something about Ballroom dancing. I know nothing.

What I do know is these TV networks can take almost any topic and sell you on it. Isn't that scary? Yes and no.

NO because if you have a product or service and you want publicity...steal the magic that draws us to watching Ballroom dancing celebrities on TV.

This shows the hook wasn't very good but they did a great job when I started watching it. The same for you. Even if your hook is bad...make your persoanlity and content shine.

Oh I hear cheering so I have to run back to the TV and see who's dancing next! Damn TV!

Missing You

Well now I've done it. I brought up my Gido (or Grandpa) in my last blog. He died last August. The first person I really cared about to die. Isn't that something...to make it 34 years and only lose one person. Wow!

I will forever cherish the memory of sitting around his humble farmhouse listening to Bill Cosby on record. I'd be laughing so hard, tears would stream down my face as I watched my Gido busting a gut in his rocking chair with his work clothes still on.

What does this have to do with radio or publicity? Nothing. Except don't take it so seriously.
Smile today. Laugh like children. And in my case I'm gonna laugh like my Gido!

What am I missing?

I spent the last hour creating what I thought was the perfect copy for another project I'm about to launch. The I's were dotted, the T's were crossed...but still something was missing. It was driving me nuts. Would I ever realize what was missing?

I wrote it the way the experts all said to write it...ohhh... that's it...the way THEY said...

Who are THEY and why do they have so much POWER?

After a year on the internet marketing to people all over the world I realized what I'm missing...the answer is me. My personality. My love of laughter which inspires creativity. I'm not a suit and I don't ever want to be one. (Even though my wife says I look HOT in my Olive suit) I'm gonna buy my 350Z sports car in my jeans and a T!

The greatest feature I inherited from my Grandfather was his sense of humor and love of laughter.

I'm a fun guy. From this moment I vow to never lose site of it again in the sales copy I write or the seminars I present! I Wayne Kelly vow to have as much fun and enjoyment while on the green side of the grass. Now excuse me cause I have to rewrite everything I've done in the last year!

Smell the Mountains

I LOVE what I do! NO Really. I can't wait for the alarm at 4am so I can head off to do another Morning Show with Jayne Garry. I also am a media trainer who works hard at building his clientel and offering so much value to each person I deal with that they tell all their contacts that I'm the best media/interview trainer in the biz.

Oh and I have a wife, a son and a daughter. I always thought I spent alot of time with them...but it turns out we are together but I'm often working or thinking about what's the next move in my business.

So I finally decided...business has to wait and it's time for family. Our first huge adventure of this summer happened Sat June 11th when we attempted to hike the Kokanee Glacier near Nelson BC.

As I hiked, I realized work just can't replace trying to keep up with a 10 and 7 year old.

I'm now going to give at least 1 hour per night to dedicated family time. It doesn't seem like much but the average for most dads is about 6 minutes.

Alan Thicke on my show

I had Alan Thicke on my radio show last week. What a great guy! Before I have someone like Alan on my show I wonder about the important things in his life....things like...what kind of car does he drive?

This is such a great first question because it instantly changes the mood of the interview and he knows we don't care about the Celebrity Alan Thicke but instead want to hear real stories. It also changes things up instead of the same old questions they must hear day after day after day.

Listeners guesses included: a Hummer, Lamborgini, BMW, Toyota Prius, Honda Accord just to name a few.
SO what does he drive? An Infinity sedan and a Lexus convertable.

I did this on my radio show this morning and had huge phones and alot of people asked me to email it to them so they could impress their friends.

Pick a number between 2 and 9.
Times that number, by 9.
The result is a 2 digit number. Add them both together to form only one number.
Subtract 5 from your answer.
If the number 1 equals the letter "A," think of the letter that goes with your number.
Think of a country that starts with that letter.
Take the last letter of the country, and think of an animal.
Take the last letter of the animal, and think of a color.

Now "psychically" give them the answer: 99% of the time, it'll be an orange kangaroo from Denmark.

Nerves are natural...but I still hate them!

I don't get nervous...ha-ha...oh yeah right! For some reason, nerves have been on my mind a lot lately.

Story #1.

I host a Top 40 Morning Show. I do a contest every Friday where I play guitar and the listener guesses what I'm playing. Believe it or not, I was nervous when we started doing this contest, even though I've played for 20 years (Just had my anniversary Mar 14) and studied as a Guitar Major at RDC School of Music...I was still nervous.

BUT, last week I was strumming along to some Dire Straits during the On-Air contest on the radio and the thought suddenly hit me..."Hey! I'm not nervous anymore! How cool is that?!"

Moral of story number 1...Everyone is nervous when they put themselves out there...but keep at it and you'll break through.

Story #2.

Recently I was asked to moderate an All Candidates Forum where the public could ask questions of the politicians to see who they were going to vote for. I started getting nervous for this about 36 hours before hand. I kept thinking...I'm a fun guy...why did I ever say yes to a group of politicians. My brain went nuts! I envisioned a riot, people screaming and shouting, babies crying....oh my....how bad was it going to be? Well, when it was finally finished, the candidates came over and said it was the best forum they'd ever been apart of and thanked me for keeping such a firm grip on the entire evening.

Moral of story 2 ... Nerves are good because they hold you accountable and show you care about doing a great job.

Story #3.

In the On-air Publicity Training program, I do mock interviews with my clients so they can feel exactly what it's like doing a radio interview. Here's what one of my clients sent after the interview.

"Thanks a lot for the interview today. It was fun, a bit unnerving, but fun!
I was surprised... I was excited and comfortable before the interview began, but as soon as it started I became much more nervous than I thought I'd be. Your help with this process has been invaluable." S. M.

Moral of story number 3...It doesn't matter how confident you are before an interview, as soon as that LIVE red light goes on....you will get nervous. Everyone does. Don't be shocked or choke up. It's an experience. Now go back to story #1 and know that...this too shall pass.

Flattered to be Googled!

As the host and producer of my own morning radio show on KBS FM, I see 20 to 30 Media Releases cross my desk every week. Most are very impersonal but every once in a while a publicist comes along that really knocks my socks off.

Meet Kathy Verelli from Vancouver. What did she do to get my attention and have me book her client without a second thought? She Googled me.

Here's the note she sent me:

"This is Kathy Verrelli, publicist for Kelly Nault, author of the popular book, "When You're About To Go Off The Deep End, Don't Take Your Kids With You". Greg & Cheryl from B100 in Kamloops just booked Kelly for a Mother's Day show and they mentioned YOU! :) Then, I Googled you and found out that you are like a Canadian Joel Roberts/Alex Carroll... if not better because you are using your talent to motivate others to be all they can be. :)

And if you want a guest who can motivate and inspire Moms to be all they can be then here you are! Look no further!"

How could I not book her client? She went through the trouble of name-dropping my friend, and she took the time to google me and find out what I do. She's not flying blind. She knows my show targets women 25-49 and many of them are moms. It is a perfect fit.

For the new do-it-yourself-publicists, make a name for yourself by checking out the websites of a few of your prospects. Flattery will get you everywhere...maybe the producer will even read your media release and book you.

I know publicists send out 50 e-mails and never get a bite. Be unique. Show the producer your client can fill time on his or her show that entertains or educates their demographic. This is the key to success.

How to use the Media

It's funny the places you find opportunity for publicity. I recently had Jack Canfield (Chicken Soup for the Soul) as a guest on my radio show. He said one of the great publicity tricks for Chicken Soup happened during the OJ Simpson Trial.

The jurors were not allowed access to outside material so Jack and Mark sent all the jurors copies of Chicken Soup for the Soul. The media picked up on the books and soon everyone was talking about the books the OJ jurors were reading.

Guess what.

It happened again but this time it was food instead of books and it was the Michael Jackson trial, not OJ. Here's the story we the media received:

The Michael Jackson trial judge was overruled by the jury Tuesday when they extended their 10-minute snack break because of an unexpected bonanza: free pizza. Superior Court Judge Rodney Melville has been running an unusually rigid schedule with no lunch hour, just three quick snack breaks during six hours of testimony - a hunger-inducing regimen he calls "the Melville diet." When jurors took an extra 15 minutes getting back into their seats, he offered an explanation. "The Olive Garden heard a CNN report that the jurors were starving to death," he announced. "So they sent over a bunch of pizzas." He said the jury "sent out an attack squadron" with word that they wanted time to eat their pizzas. "So now they're full, and they can thank CNN," he said.

Is it similar? Well I thought of the Chicken Soup Story as soon as I heard it. The moral of the story...feel free to recycle ideas. You don't have to reinvent the wheel just change the tread once in a while.

Show prep from the basement

Over the weekend I found a Sears Catalogue from 1975 in my Grandma’s basement. What fun it was laughing over which family members still have furniture, bedspreads, or Chesterfields (couches) from that era.

The funniest thing was the fashion section. The clothing style is almost trendy today…minus the polyester of course…or should I say thankfully!

So I started a new contest on my radio show called, “How Much Was it?” I read the description and listeners have to guess how much it cost in 1975. People loved guessing but then they wanted to share the treasures they have in their homes. The earliest Catalogue from my listeners was 1911!

So go in your basement and pull out the crap. You’ll have fun discussing or defending yourself.

I realized I have one regret. I wish I had copies of the Sears Catalogues for 1995 and 1997 for my 2 children…so in 30 or 40 years from now…they can point at the pages and laugh.

Learn to be a great interview

It's funny the places where one can learn about success in radio publicity.

Last week's episode of The Apprentice did a great job of showing what it takes to connect with an audience. If Donald Trump drives you crazy and you just can't stand to watch the show...here's what happened.

Two teams went into a TV studio and auctioned off bands like The Barenaked Ladies, Simple Plan, and Gene Simmons on an 11-minute segment at a TV station.

Now, the educational part was in how the On-Air aspect of the auction was taken to another level by the apprentice teams becoming characters for their audience. They weren't boring business people but rather transformed into Hip Happening VJ's on a mission.

They spoke the language of the demo they were trying to target and most importantly matched the energy of the show hosts.

When your successful radio publicity campaign has you on radio stations like Z100 New York or KIIS in LA, you will need to match the energy of the host, otherwise you will come across as a dud.

It may feel unnatural but, practice speaking at a higher energy than you’re used to and see if it works. Hey why not pretend you’re a DJ.

One final piece to this puzzle, you will be amazed at how your interviews will improve if you take a few moments to checkout the radio show online and then match your interview to that same level!
